Roof cost calculator for Alberta homes

Enter your home's footprint, roof pitch and the shingle you are considering. The roof cost calculator turns that into roof area, squares and a 2026 installed price range, so you can sanity-check quotes before you get them.

Use the ground-floor footprint, not total living area. A two-storey home has the same roof footprint as its main floor.

Rough estimate

$12,316 to $22,169

Architectural asphalt shingles, about 2,281 sq ft of roof surface (25.1 squares including waste).

Per square foot
$5 to $9
Per square (100 sq ft)
$500 to $900

These figures are rough 2026 Alberta market guides in CAD, installed, before GST. They are not a quote from Apex Roofing Airdrie. Decking repairs, ventilation upgrades, skylights and access can move the real number. A hail claim can reduce your out-of-pocket cost to your deductible.

Method: footprint × pitch multiplier × waste factor = roof area; roof area × material rate × complexity factor = range.

How the roof cost calculator works

Roofers price work by the square, which is 100 square feet of roof surface. Your roof surface is larger than your home's footprint because it slopes, so the calculator multiplies the footprint by a pitch factor (a 6/12 roof has about 12 percent more surface than the floor beneath it), then adds a waste allowance for cuts at hips, valleys and edges. That area is multiplied by an installed rate for the material you pick, then adjusted for complexity, because a cut-up roof with dormers and skylights takes longer and needs more flashing than a plain gable.

The rates are rough 2026 Alberta market guides in Canadian dollars, installed and before GST. They assume a full tear-off, disposal, synthetic underlayment, ice-and-water shield at the eaves and valleys, new flashing where needed, a magnetic nail sweep and cleanup. They do not include decking replacement, ventilation upgrades, new skylights or unusual access, which is why an on-site measurement is the only way to get an exact number. If hail has damaged your roof, an approved claim can bring your share down to the deductible, and our roof insurance claim team handles the paperwork.

Roof cost calculator: common questions

01How accurate is this roof cost calculator?

It gives a rough 2026 Alberta market range, not a quote. It uses your footprint, pitch and material to estimate roof area, then applies installed per-square-foot ranges. Decking repairs, ventilation, skylights and access change the real number, which is why we measure on site for free.

02How do I find my roof pitch?

Hold a level horizontally against the roof or a rafter in the attic, measure 12 inches along it, then measure straight down to the surface. If that drop is 6 inches, the pitch is 6/12. Most Airdrie homes sit between 4/12 and 8/12.

03What is a roofing square?

A square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Roofers price by the square, and three bundles of architectural shingles usually cover one square.

04Why does the calculator add area for pitch?

A sloped roof has more surface than the floor it covers. A 6/12 pitch adds about 12 percent, a 12/12 pitch adds about 41 percent. The multiplier turns your flat footprint into real roof area.

05Does the price include tear-off and disposal?

Yes. The ranges assume a full tear-off, disposal, underlayment, ice-and-water shield at the eaves and valleys, new flashing where needed and cleanup. Unticking tear-off lowers the range slightly, though we rarely recommend layering over old shingles.

06Will hail insurance change what I pay?

Often, yes. If a hail claim is approved, your out-of-pocket cost is typically your deductible, plus any upgrade you choose such as Class 4 shingles. The calculator shows full retail cost so you can see what the claim is worth.

07Is metal roofing really two to three times the cost of asphalt?

Installed standing-seam metal in Alberta usually lands around two to three times an architectural asphalt roof of the same size, but it can last twice as long and sheds snow and hail well. The calculator shows both so you can compare.
